Tomb Kings Army - building - part 1

Wow it's been ages since my last post and even longer since I posted about Warhammer. What have I been doing? Well I've started a new Warhammer army. Board with my Warriors of Chaos and sure they hate me, I've decided Dwarves would suit me best, but with two tournaments coming up in June, there was no way I could make, paint and do them justice in time!

Then Tomb Kings came about and thought they now looked interesting, different to the armies I'd normally collect and also quick to paint! My idea is to do a quick Tomb Kings army to tide me over till I can finish a Dwarf one.

The plan, with 6 weeks before my first tournament, was to spend three weeks building and next three weeks speed painting 2400 points worth! To cut a long story short it, I managed to build it but I had to give up on the painting, just too much!

I'm still trying to paint it quickly, but with a bit more relaxed timeframe!
I'm building this army differently to how I'd normal do it. Normally I'd build and paint one unit at a time, but this time I've built the whole army and I'm now currently base-coating all the models, the next stage will be to shade and highlight them all.

Hordes - Trollbloods 1st 15 points

Hi All

Its been a long time coming, heres the first 15 points for my Hordes Trollblood army. I'm really trying to paint them to the best of my ability instead of rushing though them, so their taking awhile.

The Group Shot

I chose Hoarluk Doomshaper, Rage of Dhunia as my first Warlock just because I like the model, although I thought he was a little small compared to the other Trolls so I stuck him a large stone.

Next up is the Impaler Troll.

And the Mauler.

And last but not least, the Fennblades Unit

Hordes - Trollblood Reforcements

Hi all
Blimy it's been over a month since my last post. Although I haven't finished painting the Trolls I have already, I have bought some more.

Normally I collect my armies in little sections, but I've started going to a gaming club in Hinkley (in Leicester) and their've got no problem with using unpainted models.

I've now got almost enough for a 50 point game. Here's the list of my Trollblood army as it stands:

I've also bought a second Warlock, Borka Kegslayer, thought it would be handy having to 2 casters.

I've still got 4 points to spend, which I'm going to use on a solo.

Also I was told about this great free app for my phone called 'ibodger'. Which is what I did the list above with. Granted would be better to have a Warhammer version as Warmachine and Hordes list are not the most difficult/time-consuming to write.

Hopefully next week I'll have some pictures of actual painted models, because I've almost painted 15 points worth.

Khador, Yuri the Axe

Hi all

Here's the final model in this batch for my Warmachine Khador Army, Yuri the Axe.

So far I've painted 21 points for Khador, which is a bit of a odd number. So I've bought a unit of Widowmakers which takes it up to 25 point. I've also made up a Man-O-War Drakhun which Matt bought me for my birthday last year. I think i'm going to save painting these till after I've done a few Trollblood minis.

Trollbloods update

How to do... Foam Weathering

Hi all

Since I posted up pics of my Khador Warjacks, a few people have asked how I did the Gritty/weathered look on the armour.

So here's my quick step by step of Foam Weathering.

What you'll need

A brush for mixing paints, a dry brush/old brush and some foam. For foam I use one of the off cuts from my carry case, but foam from a blister pack will work just as well.

Step 1 - Basecoat

Paint all the basecoat on the model and all the layering you might need to do. Bear in mind, this will messy and you will have to re-paint some areas.

Step 2 - Paints & Mixing

I mixed GW's Scorched Brown, Chaos Black and Knarloc Green (because this the base colour i'm painting over)

Now dip the foam into the paint. And dabbing the foam should give you the effect below.

Step 3 - Dabbing the 1st colour

Dap the area's you want to look worn.

Should look like this when finished.

This also works the same on the Red area's but show up more on brighter colours.

I used the Dry/Old Brush to prod in the hard to reach areas.

Step 4 - Metal Chips

Do the same, but this time with Bolt Gun Metal

Should look like this.

Step 5 - Fixing up

If you've done to much, you can go back and dab some of the original base coat colour over the top (this case it Knarloc Green).

Re-paint the area's which shouldn't be worn.

Step 6 - Wash

Once you're happy with it, given the model a coat of Delvan Mud wash.

Once done, carry on with Highlighting and Shading as normal.

I've finished this unit now, so in a few days I'll post up the finished pictures.

Starting a new army, Trollbloods

Happy New Year everyone,

I've started a Trollbloods army for Warmachine & Hordes. I'm going to collect these along side my Khador army as no one I know (apart from Matt) plays Warmachine & Hordes I can lend one out and get a game.

I got a shed load for Christmas and bought a few more yesterday, so once I've finished the last of the Khador models I have, I'm going to start putting these together.

So far my army list is:

Troll Axer 6pts

Troll Impaler 5pts

Dire Troll Mauler 9pts

Troll Bouncer 5pts

Warmachine, first Khador mini's finished

2 Tone Priming

Hi all

Just a quick update, a while ago I primed my Warmachine and some Malifaux minis. I thought I would try something a bit different.

I read a tutorial on 2 tone priming here and have been itching to give it a try. Basically its spraying your miniatures black, then a light dusting of white spray over the top where the light would hit it. This gives you the benefits of black and white undercoats.

Only painted one so far, my first Malifaux model. Worked really well, made a nice change painting over white.

The Hellcannon is Finished!

Wow, its been ages since my last post. I've struggling to find the time, very busy at work.

I have had a bit of time to do some painting though and finished the Hellcannon Anyway enough talk, here's the pic's

Used my new way of painting brass on this model.

Paint Dwarven Brass, then a wash of Delvan Mud, followed with a wash of Turquoise Hawk (very thin, I might have put it on to thick), touch up with Dwarven Brass and highlight with Boltgun Metal or Mithril Silver.

Warmachine, starting a Khador army

Hi All

I picked up the rulebook for Warmachine ages ago and finally got round to making the models I had collected.

For a while now I have wanted to try games other than the ones Games-Workshop make, its not that i'm bored of GW I just want to broaden my Gaming horizon. Also GW haven't really made a new game in 10 years.

My idea was to pick up a few rule-books and just enough model to play the games and see which I like most. (I think I may have a Rule-book collecting addiction)

Looking though the rulebook I liked Khador the most, none of the other races really appeal to me. To be honest I find Hordes much more interesting, I like the look of Trollbloods, Circle Orboros and Skorne, but the Hordes rule-book wasn't released at the time.

Anyway on to the models i've made. I've got about 21 points so far and I think I will leave it at that till I've played a few games.

The plastics are interesting. They aren't supplied the on traditional frames like Games-workshop models, but still have loads of mold lines.

Hellcannon

Just a quick update on what i've been working. I've been doing a Hellcannon for my Warriors army and I will have to say, this is one of my least favourite models i've put together. It didn't fit together very well and nothings straight.

For the base, I've used an old movement tray which just happened to be the right size and cut some cork to fit

Next I will fill the gaps with filler then flock it.

I've also been making a whole load of other stuff as well, but I think I will save it for another post.

Warhammer Forge, Dark Eldar & Chaos Dwarf = cool

I been having a look at the pictures from this years Games Day which have been posted on Bell of Lost Souls. And at first glance they look awesome.

The new Dark Eldar look much better than the old ones. although there is no chance I can start a new 40k army, I'm definitely thinking about them for a kill-team!

The Chaos stuff from Warhammer Forge also look really good, the only problem is that I said after the current batch of Chaos stuff i'm working on I wouldn't get any more.

And last but not least, the Chaos Dwarf. At the minute they look just like extra warmachines for Chaos, but then there's this guy, who looks like a army general, so maybe we will some Chaos Dwarf infantry.

The beginnings of an army

For months now i have been work on the beginnings of my Dark Elf army. And now have the first three units.
Dark Elf where the first thing i collected years back when i was a kid, so in honour to this and because the new ones are cool. I decided to reuse a lot of my old models. Though didn't have many of the models i needed, so to make the numbers up i bought some more from eBay ( it was a little costly but worth it ! ) .

my 20 strong classic Black Guard

25 strong Corsairs ( well it will be when I've finished the last 6 of them)

30 warriors

I still have a long way to go though before its a game ready army, like adding things repeater crossbow men, dark riders, cold ones and many more !!

Warhammer Terrain WIP

Hi all, here's a quick picture of the scenery I've been working over the last week.

I've made something for 7 out of 10 of the mystical monuments in the rulebook.

I made all of them from old CD's (bases), 1 ruins set, odd bits from the bits box and random crap from the garden. I'll post some better pictures when their painted.

Also I dug out my Keep from the really old GW game Battle-masters. I think its about time this got a re-paint, at the minute it looks a little dated to use next to my other scenery.

And after another let down by my Warriors of Chaos at the last tournament I went to, I've decided they need something other than troops. So I found out my old Giant model in my bit box and gave him a face lift (horns to be exact), he can double-up as Cycgor in my old beastmen army. Also I've ordered a Hellcannon, which should give me something to do in the shooting phase :)

Warriors of Chaos Exalted Hero

I've finished one of the Exalted Heroes I've been working on.

I took the pictures at night, so I was struggling to get the lighting right.

Also me and Matt played our 2nd Game of Warhammer 8th Ed. I'm loving the new edition at the minute, bloody and violent, suits my Warriors of Chaos down to the ground. Plus I get to use the marauders I painted!

I took a few pictures but forgot when the game got going.

This was taken just after deployment. We rolled 'Battle for the Pass'. The woods where normal wood apart from the GW woods which we used as Mysterious Woods.

The rock where impassable and to the right is a Acropolis of Heroes which makes units within 6" Stubborn and also impassable.

Matt's army deployed. He hasn't finished his Dark Elves yet, so for the time being he's been playing a mix of Empire and Bretonnians to make up the numbers.

My Battleline, the plan was for the Knight to charge though the gap in the scenery and cause havoc in Matts lines with the Warriors and Marauders following up.

This picture was taken just before it all went wrong. This was at the end of turn 1, Matt then charge the Chaos Knights with his Swordsmen and White wolf cavalry. With my knights being Stubborn because of the Acropolis and Matt having Steadfast, this combat lasted the entire game and blocked off that side of the table.

On the right side of the table, I finished off Matts knights winning me the game.

It was a low scoring game, but for me the highlight of the game was 5 Marauder Horsemen killing 3 Bretonnian knights with throwing axes!

Fixing up old scenery

As well as more Chaos Warriors, I have also been fixing up some of my old scenery for 8th Ed and some of the other games I have been looking into starting.

First up, is my woods. Before, all our trees were on separate bases, which was fine for games like Lord of the Rings but for Warhammer and 40K a proper base is much better.

I wanted to keep them as generic as possible so I can use them for over games systems like Warmachine and Flames of War.

Here's the bases I have made. We played our first game the other day and decided to tone down the Mysterious Woods rules by saying these are normal (everyday) woods and we used the Games-Workshop 'Spooky Trees' as a Mysterious Wood, which worked really well.

I've also fixed up my really old Wizards Tower which I originally made about 10 years ago. I used some moss to cover up where the paint and roof tiles fell off.

I love the new scenery rules, got loads of ideas for the other scenery in the book.

Warriors Reinforcements Update

Here's an update on the Warriors of Chaos minis I've been doing.

These seam to be taking me a long time to get going, Although I have done a little more since I took these pictures, they are all undercoated and I have painted the Warriors with Great-weapons (these are the most urgent, because I wanted to take them to my next tournament).

Now that ranks work better for monster infantry, I thought I would like to add a command to my Orges unit.

To make them look like they are wearing Chaos Armour, I added lots of Marauder Shields, which gives them a bit of a turtle look (ogres in a half shelf).

I've done a few updates to the Heroes aswell, adding greenstuff in the gaps.

I blended his cloak in by adding fur to the top of it (fur and hair are about the only things I can sculpt).

And the rest of the troops.

The warriors with Great-Weapons are the only ones I've finished so far.

Warriors Reinforcements

I know, I had said that after the Dragon that was it for the warriors of chaos and I would start a new army, but a lot has changed since then.

A couple of weeks ago was the Summer Incursion tournament at Maelstrom Games. Another great weekend and managed to end my loosing streak by winning 2 of my 6 games which is great for me. Winning 2 games has made a big difference.

Then there's the matter of 8th edition which looks like it's going to give power back to the infantry man. Considering my army is about 80% infantry blocks this is a really good thing.

So I have been looking at my army to see what changes/improvements need to be made.
So here's my 'to do list'.

1. I have a Chaos Warrior unit and Chosen unit both at 10 man strong with Great-weapons. I think these are to small, so I'm going to add an extra 5 men to each units.

2. I picked up 2 new minis from Maelstrom which I intend to use both as characters. They are both from a company called Enigma Miniatures and look really nice.

I want to use this guy as a lord. I given him a flail which is a little different.

This one is going to be my Battle Standard. I want to do one which is on foot so he's right in the thick of it with my foot troops, plus they are greatly improved in 8th, now being able to re-roll all leadership tests within 12".

3. I have 3 ogres in my bits box which I think I will make up as a command for me existing unit. These guy look like they will be get better in 8th too!

4. I think I might add some funky units to. I'm thinking maybe a giant, hellcannon and warshine.

I will post up some better pictures of the characters when I've added some green stuff.

Necromunda, Blast from the past

Played something a bit different at the club last night. Me and my mate John thought it would be a great idea to get Nercomunda out for a bit of a change.

Its still a brilliant game and brought back a ton of memories. I highly recomend getting old games out to any body.

Dragons and Summer Incursions

Wow, its been over a month since my last post. The main reason is I have spent that time just painting this bloody dragon. Sometimes I find painting like reading a book, if its a book I enjoy I can read it really quick, but if I'm not feeling it, it can drag.

Anyway I'm happy with the results. If I could go back I would make some changes, like a more exciting conversion for the rider instead of a mostly Kit-bashed one.

Also I have just finished it in time for the Summer Incursion tournament at Maelstrom Games next weekend which was my goal!

Without further ado, here's it is.

Because of it's size, I was finding it really hard to photograph.

Pic's of the base. I'm really happy with this. I was a bit worried that the stone may have turned out a bit bland.

Also, I did a couple of pins into the base and its rock. Much more sturdy than it looks.

I'm not sure how i'm going to get on gaming with this in my army, I've never used a massive monster before.

I must emit I'm not confident about the tournament next week. I never used a dragon before, had no practice games since my last tournament and I've had to sacrifices a few units to fit it into the 2000 points which makes my army feel very small.

Here's what i'm taking, I not going to post up my actual list (don't want to give away all my tricks).

Here's the reinforcements. At Summer Incursion you get extra points if you fighting a tougher army than you, for example Daemons.

I came last at the Winter Incursion, so my target this time is to come anywhere but last. (although I did get good prize last time!)

I will try take more pictures this time and post some posts over the weekend.

Chaos Dragon WIP

Pulp City - Solar

I've not had much time to paint stuff over the last month, but I did manage to finish Solar for Pulp City. I really like this model, he's one of the few proper spandex superheroes in the Pulp City range and in the game he's a good all round character (the Space Marine of Pulp City).

Like with all my pulp city minis, I've been trying to paint them differently to other models I've been painting recently. This guy has no metallic's and I've tryed to paint him as bright as I can!

I have just realized I have been doing this blog now for over a year! And I just want to say thanks to everyone who has been following me and left comments.

Although I'm in no way bored with Warhammer/40K and still have a load of cool ideas and thing I want to do. This year I'm going to venture out of the cocoon that is Games-Workshop and try a few of the other games that have been interesting me like Flames of War and Warmachine, hopefully this will bring fresh challenges and some interesting blog articles.

Winter Incursion

Last weekend I went to Maelstrom Games 'Winter Incursion' Fantasy tournament. It was my first 2 day tournament and really enjoyed it, even though I manage to come last (thats why you wont find any tactics articles on this blog).

The venue was amazing, purpose built for tournaments. Downstairs is the store and upstairs is the gaming hall which is half done (when its finished, they said it will hold over 100 players).

Ultramarine Movie Cast

When I first heard about the Ultramarine movie, I must say I was skeptical. Get it right is/was going to be a hard task.

Then I saw the interview with Dan Abnett. He is one of my favourite Black Library authors also I think I have heard somewhere that he has also wrote a few TV/Film scripts before. So confidence in the film had grown quite a bit.

Then this morning, I saw this video interview with the cast, which is an awesome cast much better than I could have hoped for!

Now I'm really excited!

40k Defense Scenery - Part 1

For a while now Me and Matt have been gearing up for a campaign, in fact since we started our Ork and Space Marine armies, which has been a bit of arms race.

Where almost there, just need some scenery for our armies to defend.

We aren't using planet strike, so we don't have to worry about mounted guns and stuff like that.

We need:

At least 2 Imperial Bunkers

At least 2 Ork Bunkers

Barricades for both armies

and 1 fort each for the imperials and Orks

I've been off work this week so I have made a start.

For the Imperial building, I have gone down the bought route (or Xmas present to be exact).

I decided not to add the walls with guns, because I didn't think they needed them and I'm thinking about using them for something else.

I've scratched build the Ork buildings.

Started with upside-down plant pots and a CD on top.

I stuck lots of corrugated card squares to the sides, building up layers, then stuck lot of bits to them to give them a junk-yard feel.

The one on the left still needs stuff adding to it.

The back of one of them.

I also found this fort I made way back for Gorkamorka about 10 years ago. Looks really dated, but i'm unsure wether to try and restore it or start with something fresh.

Yeap, thats real dust, not some really cool weathering effect.

Pulp City - Finished Supremes

A few pic's of my finished Pulp City Supremes. Really enjoyed painting these, was really nice to paint a stand-alone mini which isn't part of an army.

Iron Train - I tried of lots new techniques on this model. Although he is a little on the dark side, I'm really happy with the weathering on it base and I feel like I've finally nailed an easy why to paint brass which in the past I've struggled with.

To paint the brass, I painted Dwarven Brass then washed over it with Turquoise Hawk and dry brushed Dwarven Brass over the top.

Androdia - Nice and easy one to paint, just Mithril Silver, with washes over the top.

Orc & Goblins Sunday Surprise!

Sitting in my Inbox this morning was an email from Games-Workshop (see below). It's very cryptic about new Orc & Goblin releases in May. I have a feeling it will be a wave miniatures and not an Army Book.

Space Hulk Update - Part 3

Another update on my Space Hulk stuff. I've painted a 2nd squad of Terminators and 8 Genstealers.

Which leaves me with only 8 Genstealer, 1 Space Marine with power claws, 1 Librarian, 1 Broodload and the random bits like the marine on the throne. Almost done!

And the Genstealers, I have only taken pictures of 3 of them, because I couldn't remember which ones I already had done. Also I have re-paint all there bases, so they look more weathered.

Hi, Im Matty , Andraths brother . This is to be my first of hopefully many posts on his blog .
I start collecting warhammer and warhammer 40k around the same time as Andrath, my armies are mainly space marines and a very WIP (work in progress) dark elf army of which re-uses and update some old classic models from when I started collecting but that's for another post, today its all about the plup city fever that I have been court up in and my new WIP plup city miniatures I had bought to battle against Andrath.

sometimes when i make up my models I can be a bit lazy with my basing of the models but this time I thought I'd go to town on them as I've only got a few superheros and super villains to do I'll let you be the judge if they have work or not but I'm happy with them, and can not wait to get them paint up.

A few week ago me and my brother Matt stumbled on a interesting game called Pulp City. Its a small skirmish games about Superheroes, Villains and other comic book styles characters.

what appeals to me about this game is with it being a skirmish game, you only need 3 to 8 models a side to play the game, so not a massive commitment. The setting is very different to a lot of other games with it not being Fantasy, Sci-fi or Historical (although its kind of all three).

Also all the rules are free to download, although I haven't played a game yet they look really good, quick and easy to learn.

I bought the Heroes and villains starter sets, because I couldn't decide between them. Which arrived the other day.

Big Gaming week, for me anyway!

I've played 3 games this week, that triple the amount of games I usually play.

First up is two games of Space Hulk against my brother Matt switch between Marines and Genstealers. We are going to try and play through all the missions in a simple campaign. The rules are, we take it in turns to play though a mission till we complete it and the person to complete all the missions first is the winner. Unfortunately we both got wiped out, on the plus side it gives me more time to paint all the minis I need to play Mission 2.

My third game was 40K against John at my local club. 1,500 points, my Orks against his Space Wolves. We ran out of time though and only got to turn 4. It was technically a draw, but I definitely was going to lose. I'm finding Space Wolves a tough nut to crack with my Orks. Against Orks the Wolves have all the advantages of normals Space Marine, but non of the weakness.

New Beastmen Poster

Just seen this poster. There's a couple of things which interest me about this picture. First the new models, Beastigors and Minotaurs which look like they might be plastic.

Gor and Ungor are now in different units (which I like). And there is a big lack of skirmishers, which I really like because I gave up playing Beastmen because it was a bit like a 40K army.

I think I might give them another try!

I have just read these rumors on another blog. If these are correct, its likely Beastmen will be my next Warhammer Fantasy army!

Ok, just had a quick 5 minute convo with my mate who's had a 5 minute read thorough the new book.

Herds have split , both ranked up but ungor get the option to skirmish
Unruly has gone
New rule for "herds"- when in combat take a leadership check.
If passed the unit gets hatred, if you roll insane courage you get hatred and frenzy. Didn't seem to be a downside if you failed.

Bestigor capture standards if they simply win a round of combat, get to add it (and any others they capture) to their combat res.

Minotaurs get frenzy if they win a round of combat, for every round they win they get a cumulative extra attack! Minos can only ever pursue or overrun 1d6 (they can now overrun)

Chariots STILL CORE

Centigor, still special not fast cav. No drunken every turn, instead roll a dice at the beginning of the game. Effects range from +2 I, to -1 movement to something else he couldn't remember.

New unit Harpies

New unit. Some kind of jabberwoky thing. Enemy units in 12" take Ld check, for every number they fail by take a wound no armour. seemed to be 5's across the board. If it takes a wound in combat enemy takes a S5 hit. 275 points.

Think he said about a gorgon thing, mainly 6's.

There was a normal giant, then there was a cyclops giant which was basically a giant with only Ld8, but armed with a stone thrower and every (enemy?) wizard within 24" has to pass a leadership check or not be able to cast spells.

I'm not very good at freehand stuff, I think the lightning on the power sword has turned out okay. I copied it from the tutorial in White Dwarf 375 (the Space Hulk one!)

Last summer I picked up a copy of Space Hulk. I didn't have time to paint it and its been sitting in my cupboard screaming out to be painted for ages.

I want to get them all painted before playing the game properly (I had a quick game down the club when I first got it)

Cheap and Cheerful Stunties and Movement trays

Over the last month i've been working on some Dwarfs I got with skull-pass last year and the odd Dwarf I had laying around. The idea behind this army is that I wanted to do a cheap small army for things like Doubles tournaments.

The only unit I've completed so far, is the Thunderers.

Normally for movement trays I use the Games-Workshop's ones. But keeping with the cheap theme, I made them!

I've got lots of cork flooring tiles (that's the material picked), so I marked out the tray's I wanted, leaving a 1cm lip round the edge.

Cut out. Cork is really easy to cut and bendy! (but we will forget about that for this tutorial).

Then I added a shed load of filler round the edge.

Trimmed of the excess filler with my knife and made sure the Dwarfs still fit.

Then I flocked, forgot to photograph and painted.

And there you go, my quick guide to making movement trays.

Epic Fail, Future plans

Well, on Monday I forgot to buy my tickets for the GW 40K doubles Tournament when they went on sale. I rang up yesterday only to be told they had sold out by 12.30 on Monday (in just 2 and a half hours).

So, it looks like the Space Wolves are going to be put on the back burner. Although I'm still going to do them for the 2011 tourney, I think I'm going to go back to one of my earlier plans before this all came about.

I have a whole list of things I need/want to do, I think thats what I love about this hobby I'm always thinking of new idea's to do!

Here's my list at the min:

1. Me and Matt are preparing to run a couple of 40K campaign's between us, one's with a mighty-empires set I picked up and our original idea which was a very narrative based campaign. For both of these I need to make some defense scenery for are armies to defend.

2. I have a massive back-log of Orks which I got for last Christmas and my birthday which need doing.

3. Space Wolves for next year!

4. I want to paint the dwarfs from my battle of skull pass set and make them into a small (Good Guy) doubles tournament army.

5. I really want to re-paint my Battlefleet Gothic Ork fleet to match my current 40K army, which will be useful for number 1

6. And finally, I have a copy of Space Hulk which need the mini's painting!

It's just a case of what to do first!

New Skaven!

A quick post, images of the new Skaven have finally surfaced (sorry about the pun). I think they are a vast improvement over the old. Really like the Warlord Queek Headtaker model.

Although I think the Stormvermin might be a little over priced (by about 5 pounds).

I'm not going to start an army, but I might pick up some Clanrats for Heroquest/Warhammer Quest or even a Mordhiem warband.

Space Wolves codex, first impressions!

So the other day I got the new Space Wolves codex. It a really nice book, I haven't had time to read all the fluff but I've had look though the army list and started to write down a few ideas before I buy the models.

I really want to make use of the Wolf Guard rules where they can join other units, which I think will make some interesting unit combinations. I also want to try and squeeze a lone wolf into the list as well, I think they may be my favourite unit!

There is a few of things i've noticed in the codex which I don't like.

First up

If a wolf Guard is given a bike he can join a Swiftclaw pack, but if he takes a jump pack he can't join a Skyclaw unit, I think this may be a mistake.

and second, Bloodclaws don't seem very good, they are 15 points like Grey Hunters. Don't have a Boltgun, have a lower BS & WS and suffer from the head strong rule. Yes, they get +2 attacks when they charge, but I would rather shoot with the grey hunters pistols and charge (still having 3 attacks) plus they also have a better chance of hitting. If the bloodclaws was a few points cheaper, they may of found a place in my list.

Also I wish Wolf scout where troops, there alot of really fun/good choices in the Elites section.

Anyway, enough ranting. Apart from the points above its really good!, honest.

Starting a new 40k army

Right, the Warrior of Chaos are finished (well for the time being anyway). Which means I can start my next project which is a new small army for next years 40k Doubles Tournament at Warhammer World which I've talked my brother into going with me.

He will be taking his Space Marine army, which means I can't take my Orks, but I thought it would be a good chance to get my old Space Marine (My Storm Warriors Chapter) out. But looking at them now they look very dated (10 years old) and because I only need 750pts I'm going to start a new space marine army.

I was going to make my own Chapter with a Knight theme running though it (a bit like Templars but a codex chapter), but I have been swayed towards the Space Wolves (I know, jumping on the band wagon!). I really like the norse theme, I haven't read the codex yet but what really changed my mind was the huge amount of 'bitz' which comes with the sets compared to the templars. With the massive amount of options, I'm really looking forward to putting them together.

I will be posting my progress over the coming weeks!

The Leicester Squiggle Tournament 09

I'm a week late with this post, but never mind.

Last Saturday was the leicester Squiggle Tournament and I had a great time.

It was a three game Warhammer Fantasy tournament, with me getting a draw against Vampires, massacred by Warriors of Chaos and got a massacre against an Ogre army.

I finished a respectable 17th out of 30 which Im happy with!

Also I came 3rd or 4th (wasn't paying attention when they announced it) with best painted army, which I'm really happy with because there was some nice looking armies there.

I'm really hoping they run another tournament next year.

I have now completely finished my Warriors of Chaos army, with one week to go before the Leicester Squiggle Tournament. So here it, my complete army even with the units i'm not taking.

Sorcerer's, Clocks, Paper and Burning Things

I've finished the first of the characters for my army i'm taking to the squiggle tournament, the sorcerer.

When I had put this model together I thought it really needed a cloak to make him look more important. None of the plastic clocks would fit, and i'm rubbish with green stuff, so I needed to think of another way of making it. When I remembered paper banners, something which has been killed of (when I had final mastered doing them) with GW plastic ones.

I've never seen guides or even anyone try paper cloaks on the internet before, so I thought it would be a good idea to share this, as I'm really impressed with the results.

1. Starting with the model, as you can see at the minute he looks rubbish.

2. Draw the shape of the cloak and cut out!

3. Bend in to a ruff shape around the model and glue it to the points which touch the model. On this model its the back and the back of the feet.

4. Paint the cloak with a coat of water down PVA Glue and shape again. When dry give it a few more coats of PVA. When your finished it should be really stiff, almost like very thin plastic.

5. Then I used green stuff to blend it in with the rest of the model.

6. Finished off with other bits added to the model.

7. Then painted as normal

I enjoyed making the sorcerers cloak, so I've added one to my Exalted Hero as well. But I wanted it to look more worn, so I used a match to burn the edges. I did this before I glued it to the model, because the results are bit hit or miss, also burning things is always fun!!

Then sculpted the green stuff to look like fur and blend into the model.

I hope you've found this post useful. I think using paper on models is an art/technique which has really died out in recent years, which is a shame, because when done right the results can be fantastic. For my next army (which is looking like being an Orc and Goblin one) it will have all paper banners.

Well, I've submitted my Warriors of Chaos' list for the 'Leicester Squiggle' Tournament. I have made some changes from the last tournament.

Because I didn't have much time before. My army was made up of mostly elite chaos warriors, which for most people I'm sure this is fine, but I lack the ability to make armour saves, which is very important for 'Chaos Warriors'.

This time i'm going to take more Marauders to compensate.

Making a Quick Blood Bowl Pitch

At my club blood bowl has become popular recently. So I thought it would be useful to have as many pitches as I could get my hands on, then new players would only have to worry about getting a team together.

A couple week ago, I almost throw away these static grass paper mat as I thought I would never need them, Games-workshop cloth static grass matts are much better.

Measured out the area I needed (77cm x 45cm), then cut it out.

Then I marked out a grid using a green maker pen (squares are 29 x 29mm).

My first attempt I tryed to draw the black crosses without marking a grid and it was a nightmare!

I then drew the pitch marking in a red marker pen.

Then I trimmed the edges off to make it look a little neater.

Finished! and Im really happy with the results.

The paper grass matt cost me around £5 and I only really had enough to make one,

But if you buy Games-Workshops cloth static grass matt (and you needed a lot) you could make 6 for £2.50 each.

Long Grass

A few people have asked my how I do my long grass.

I bought this stuff about 8 years ago from a model shop (I dont think they sell it any more). Long grass on one side and cotton wool stuff on the other.

You take a clump and pull it off

Pull the wool off and paint PVA glue on to the bottom

Push into place

Should look something like this

Add static grass around the edges, so it blends in and hides any rubbishy bits

Fantasy Hills - Day 4

The hills are now painted

The next stage is to add grass. I think this could make or brake them, because they might not fit in with my gaming board.

The paints I used are Homebase masonry paints (tester pot). I find the pots they come in are big enough for painting scenery with out having to buy a massive can.

And I mix the paints as i'm painting.

These are fine for hill, rock and other natural areas, but are to thick for detail painting.

The woods still need finishing before I post up any pictures.

Fantasy Hills - Day 1

I've got this week off work, so my task for the week is to put together some fantasy/middle-earth style scenery to go with my 40k 6x4 gaming board.

To save time and the fact I already had half the modular hills, I opted for GW plastics hills and there spooky trees which I want to make more chaos-fide so it looks like they are on the border with the chaos wastes.

The hills are going to be basic because I want them to fit in with Fantasy and Lord of the Rings. My Gaming board is build for Moonscape/City Ruins stuff and currently has no greenery. Hopefully by adding static grass to the hills and the wood I can change this.

Paint all the hills with PVA glue.

I sat the hills in a box (same size as the one the hills came in) and sprinkled the flock on. When finished I could poor the excess flock back in the tub.

DAY 2

I gave all the hills a coat of very watered PVA glue, to seal the flock, not really tried this before, so hope it worked.

Tomorrow (Tuesday), I plan on giving them a undercoat of brown paint.

Wednesday, Paint them properlly

Thursday, flock with static grass and long grass.

The wood I'm going to do like any normal miniature (ie. spray black) because of the detail I don't want to lose when using thick paint.

1 Week - 36 Orks

I'm quite pleased with myself this week, I managed to finish 36 Orks in one week.

I've had the black reach orks hanging around since last october and thought it was about time I got round to painting them.

I didn't want to spent weeks paint these, so I followed a painting guide from White Dwarf 352 which was about painting armies quickly.

Normally I would paint between 5 to 10 models at a time. But this time I painted all 36 in one go, one colour at a time. It works great for bulk models, but I would never do this elites and stuff!

They look a little rushed close up, but will be a fine for gaming with.

My First Tournament

I haven't posted for ages and the reason for that is I have been getting ready for my first Warhammer Fantasy Tournament. It all started when one quiet launch time at work, I was checking out the 'Warhammer Forum' (warhammer.org.uk) and I stumbled on a post called 'April 25th - WFB Tourney - Leicester - 1999pts', I had been thinking about going to tournaments for a while now and a local one seemed to good to miss.

When I got home I started writing out an army list to take. I decided that the army I took would have to be all painted as I am rubbish at the game, I might stand a fair chance at the 'best painted army' competition.

Both of us, was really rusty at fantasy and it showed as we only got to turn 3 before we ran out of time.

The Aftermath

The tournament was last Saturday and was really good. It wasn't to competitive, just 3 friendly games of Warhammer linked together with points. Everyone was very friendly and nobody minded my knowledge of fantasy rules being rubbish.

As expected for my first time I didn't do very well.

Game 1 one was against Wood Elves and was a massacre. I just couldn't get to grips with them and they just ran rings around me.

Game 2 against a magic heavy High Elf army was another massacre. The dice gods had forsaken me!

Game 3 was a lot better, well I got a draw but it a lot better than a massacre. It was against a Empire gun line and I think the practice against John's army payed off.

In the end I finished better than I thought I would at the beginning of the day, coming 18 out of 20.

I did a lot better at the painting, Joint winning the best painted army, me and someone else got 8 votes each (it was a good ogre army, I voted for it).

Anyway, after all that. The moral of the story is, if you've never been to a tournament before you should give it a try. If nothing else you get to play warhammer all day against new opponents.

I've finally finished my stompa. I glue the arms and head on last night and a took a quick photo tonight when I got home from work.

Right I've made my [proper] Stompa, In-fact I sprayed it and its waiting to be painted.

But I have a bit of a size issue with my old Stompa, which is much larger.

A bit of reseach, and its actually the size of a Slasher Gargant. I've got some rules from Bell of lost souls, in their 'Lord of Battle' pdf. Although at 1500pts, it limits the games it can play in. Also im missing the belly gun.

2 for 1 Battlewagons

I recently bought the new battlewagon kit. Which I really like.

My plan was to try and get 2 battlewagons out of the one kit, one will be a Transport version with a deff rolla on the front the other is more of a tank using the turret and changing the barrel for something a bit more like a Killakannon.

I made this one first, the Deff Rolla was made out of a tank trap and was connected the wagon by plastic from the screw frame. I left all the gubbin till after I made the other one.

On to Battlewagon 2

For the body, I've had this unfinished landraider hanging around for ages. I thought it makes a great battle-wagon when I've seen other peoples.

I turned it around and mounted the turret from the Battlewagon kit on it. I also chopped away the door at was the front (now the back) leaving it open, I thought this would make it feel more like the armour value 10 it should have.

The barrel was made from a light fitting. (looking back I think I should have done more to the barrel)

I painted them in my normal colours for my Ork Army.

War of the Ring preview

A few weeks ago I downloaded the preview/quick start rules for War of the Ring. Me and my Brother 'Matt' decided to give it a go. To be honest I really didn't want to like this game, because I know if I like it, I will have to collect a new Lord of the Rings army.

I really enjoyed it, can't wait till the rulebook comes out.

I recommend this for anyone who likes the Lotr game,

Well this is my first post on my new blog.

Its going to be all about Wargaming, well actually it will be petty much about Games-Workshop games, in-fact if you don't like Games-Workshop your looking at the wrong blog.

I play, or at least try and play most of GW's games
